Siena, Frattoria Sant’ Appiano, San Gimignano
Our first day trip out of Florence took us to the medieval city of Siena. Our guide taught us about Siena’s history and culture. It is possibly best known for the “rivalries” amongst its 17 wards that culminate during the annual horse race (Palio) in the Piazza del Campo.
We enjoyed a tour and lunch tasting at Trattoria Sant’ Appiano, a family-owned wintery in the Chianti region dating to the 14th century.
We finished the day in the hill townof San Gimignano in Tuscany. Encircled by 13th-century walls, its old town centers on Piazza della Cisterna, a triangular square lined with medieval houses. The Duomo di San Gimignano is a 12th-century church with frescoes by Ghirlandaio in its Santa Fina Chapel
